Our Origin Story

Though we have an About page that shares a bit of our story, we wanted to go into more detail of how Borrowed Blooms came to be, and what we hope to be able to offer to any couples looking to get married in Hawai’i!

The Idea

In the beginning of this year and I was having a chat with a friend. Just the usual stuff, kids, travel plans for 2022, and of course work.

“When did you start A Perfect Day again? my friend asked.

“Hmmm…” I thought about it for a bit. “Oh in 2002!” I answered.

I remembered it started off as a favor for a friend who needed help with planning her wedding and after I helped her, more friends began asking me. You know how you reach a certain age of your life where all of your friends are starting to get married so you go to a lot of weddings? Well all my friends started getting married and instead of being invited I was being hired to help them plan their perfect day!

“WOW you make 20 years this year!” my friend exclaimed.

“Oh wow I really do!” I replied, surprised that it’s already been 20 years.

I thought to myself how lucky I was to have fallen into a job that I was thankfully able to make a career out of. And though I still love wedding coordination and helping every couple have a stress free day through organization and planning, my lifestyle has changed. My family has grown, and I realized that sleeping at 1am after one wedding and waking up at 4am to get ready for another wedding was becoming a lot tougher than it used to be.

So that’s when I started to think, maybe there was something else I could do that would still allow me to help couples with their wedding day, but in a way that would also allow me to spend more time with my family on the weekends.

Being around weddings, you see and hear a lot. And one thing I've noticed over my years in the wedding industry was the growing concerns surrounding fresh florals. With natural disasters and supply chain issues, there has been a diminishing supply of quality flowers causing prices to skyrocket and couples to have to rethink the type and quantity of floral arrangements they can have on their wedding day. As a planner all I could do was to think of a Plan B of what to do if the couple isn’t able to get the florals they wanted, and to provide logistical support if changes had to be made on their floral invoices, but I wasn't able to really solve their problem. I’ve also begun to realize that many couples wanted the look of flowers and were open to using silk florals to cut down on costs and not have to worry about the issues that come with fresh florals.

Cue the birth of Borrowed Blooms! After seeing it firsthand I was convinced that there is a need to provide quality silk flowers to couples getting married in Hawai’i and with my years of experience I can do this with the highest level of customer service!

As I finally landed on this idea, I smiled. After 20 years of doing a career I fell into, it has now led me to a new business adventure I am so excited to embark on. I am grateful to be able to  continue to help couples have their perfect day, with not only planning, but by providing them with their perfect florals too!

I can only hope that in 2044 I’ll be able to have a conversation with a friend who will acknowledge that I'll make 20 years of doing borrowed blooms and I can reminisce on another great career I was able to have!
